The Mosaic Project

The significance of art in the lives of our youth cannot be underestimated. Yet, just when research is finally emerging that supports this, budget cuts and curricular demands are threatening the foundation of creativity in our public schools. In order to fill that gap as well as enrich the community, Pennsylvania College of Art & Design developed the Mosaic Project, a multicultural exhibition and education program for students and families in Lancaster County. It is funded by a grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation.

Understanding that art is a fundamental facet of all cultures and plays a vital role in the intellectual and social development of children, the Mosaic Project will accomplish this through three interconnected phases.

The first phase, engagement, will begin when PCA&D hosts nationally renowned artists whose works reflect identity and multiculturalism. The 2010 Mosaic artists are 2010 Fulbright lecturer Diane Edison, and Jerry Pinkney, 2010 winner of the Caldecott Medal, who will engage the PCA&D and Lancaster communities with educational workshops, lectures, and studio programs.

The second phase of the Mosaic Project is for high school and middle school students. High school students from the city’s School District of Lancaster and the county’s Pequea Valley School District will spend a day at PCA&D with Mosaic Project artists and PCA&D faculty and students. In addition, middle school students, each with an adult of their choosing, will attend PCA&D’s popular intergenerational art class throughout the fall.

The final phase of the Mosaic Project, the “after program,” continues the appreciation for art by providing student and adult participants with an art kit to take home, a full scholarship to attend a non-credit continuing education class within a year, and membership on Facebook's "The Mosaic Project at PCA&D!" page to share artwork and maintain contact with each other.
