Mosaic Project 2009: Rudy Gutierrez Visits High School Classrooms

On Friday, November 6, 2009, Rudy Gutierrez and his wife, DK Dyson, made special visits to both J.P. McCaskey and Pequea Valley High Schools.

In the morning, Gutierrez and Dyson gave a presentation to about 60 art students, teachers, and administrators at McCaskey (arranged by Kassie Schelling). Dyson mesmerized the group with her voice and instruments, welcoming students to participate in Gutierrez's artistic journey in sounds from around the world. Gutierrez described his path, from his young days struggling to understand the chaos of Brooklyn life, to his teen years when he did not fit in after a move to Teaneck, NJ.

It was at this critical time in his life that he discovered the music and album art of Santana. What intrigued the youth the most was the rich tapestry of sounds, patterns, colors, styles from many places and many faces. Just like his own background, a mix of African, Spanish, and Taino (in Puerto Rico), this unique music was a beautiful blend, honoring and embracing each of the many elements that made up the whole. His dreams were rooted in this music and in this art, and would lead Gutierrez through a life of education (Pratt University, NY), many design jobs, and ultimately the fulfillment of his greatest goal... to design the cover of a Carlos Santana album/CD.

In addition to his personal history, Gutierrez also shared the values and beliefs that have supported his journey. Through art, Gutierrez strives to show people an alternative to living in the boxes that our society often creates. For example, if someone is prejudiced, that person lives in a box of fear. By facing that fear and admitting to that fear, a person sheds his box and begins to walk the path of honesty and light. Violence, gangs, bullying, disrespecting others (especially teachers, parents, elders), and self-destruction are all fear-based boxes that we create to hide inside of. Stepping out of that comfortable zone is what is truly courageous behavior.

In the afternoon, Gutierrez and Dyson visited a Pequea Valley High School painting class instructed by Rachael Gorey. The 16 students had attended the October 2nd trip to PCA&D and used this opportunity to ask questions about his artwork, his process, his techniques. Gutierrez used the example of a recent job  for Rolling Stone magazine to map the many steps in such a time-sensitive, professional project. Individual attention was the focus for the remainder of the class, as both Gutierrez and Dyson were able to visit with each student to critique a current piece of artwork that he or she was working on. Once again, Gutierrez encouraged each artist to work from a place of honesty, of walking the path, of freedom from living in a box.
