Drawing on the South's best road food

Three illustrations by PCA&D alumna Nicole Duquette '08 are part of "The South's Best Road Food" in the November 2013 issue of Southern Living magazine (print edition, pages 51-56, Vol. 48, No. 11).

Southern Living magazine found Nicole via her website while doing research for the article. She worked closely with the magazine's assistant art director, Tim Kilgore, and was asked to create three custom-illustrated maps about the South's heavily traveled roads during the holidays.

Nicole writes that the "...art team was clearly focused on what pit stops and tourist attractions they wanted to feature. Some of the highlights featured restaurant specialties such as Peanut Butter Crock on I-20 (from Weidmann's restaurant, which has been around since 1870). Weidmann's is known for serving peanut butter out of a handmade earthenware crock. Such an interesting tradition!

"One of my favorite drawings features the Dr. Pepper Museum in Texas along I-35 and the world's largest frying pan along the I-40."

This is a truly significant job for Nicole. She's busy with other work across the nation, as well.

This past year she focused on developing illustrations of all 50 states, has been selling prints wholesale, and has been consigning with a number of shops across the country. She has an Etsy shop and recently connected with AllPort Editions, a greeting card company in Portland, Oregon. AllPort is licensing a number of Nicole's map designs for greeting cards and these designs will be part of AllPort's collection at the National Stationary Show (in New York City) in May 2014.
