Artist Talk: Joe Dettmore, the Creative Director of The Daily Show.
A Wilkes-Barre native, Joe Dettmore has been in the news business for 35 years, beginning with WDAU, Channel 22 in Scranton. His career took him to WNEP, Channel 16, also in Scranton, then to network jobs at Good Morning, America on ABC and the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw.
He won three New England regional Emmys for graphic design and more than 12 Broadcast Design Association Awards while design director at WFSB, Channel 3 in Hartford, Conn. His former NBC boss a tapped him to help launch MSNBC, where he received three national Emmys for broadcast design for the graphic look of the network, before joining the award winning The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in 2005, where he has specialized in making the show’s graphics fit Jon Stewarts’s jokes, often under very tight deadlines.
Although Jon Stewart has left the Daily Show, he is staying with the show. He’s also taking improvisation and storytelling classes in New York City and writing a play.
A graduate of Wilkes, college, he appreciates his fine art major and is grateful for his ability to draw.
