Gallery + Writing About: Erick Antonio Benitez: Esta Tierra Es Tu Tierra
WS 122 – 02 – Gallery + Writing About: Erick Antonio Benitez: Esta Tierra Es Tu Tierra
Wednesday, 1 meeting, Non-credit
6:30 – 8 PM
Instructor: Caitlin Downs
Designed for writers and artists in any genre, this generative workshop invites participants to interact with the PCA&D Main Gallery Exhibition “Erick Antonio Benitez: Esta Tierra Es Tu Tierra” and develop new work.
Esta Tierra Es Tu Tierra is an immersive multimedia installation focusing on Benitez’ travels throughout multiple cities on the U.S./Mexico border. Video projections, soundscapes, and found objects illustrate Benitez’ encounters, recreating the sights, sounds, and sentiments of the border for viewers in the Northeast who are far from territories of dualities and national divide. Benitez incorporates interviews with border agents, migrants, and minutemen, along with photographs of migrant shelters, Tent City Jail in Arizona, and Friendship Park in Tijuana. Benitez’ recreation of the U.S./Mexico border experience within an exhibition space emulates an ofrenda (offering) to those who have lost their lives on their journey to the United States. Students will be guided through the gallery and prompted to respond in writing to specific works of art (ekphrasis).
Accessibility: This workshop requires movement throughout the gallery and a portion of the gallery is only accessible by stairs. Please contact us with any accessibility questions or requests.
