Virtual Artist Talk: Manal Abu-Shaheen
New York- based photographer Manal Abu-Shaheen will present a Virtual Artist Talk Friday, Nov. 13, at 10 am. The event is hosted by the Photography & Video Department, and the entire PCA&D community and public are welcome to attend.
Abu-Shaheen, an instructor at The City College of New York, examines the ways images are used across cultures. According to her CCNY faculty bio, her work “critically engages with the complexities of living in a postcolonial global environment.” Abu-Shaheen holds a B.A from Sarah Lawrence College and an M.F.A in Photography from Yale School of Art.
Recent work by the Lebanese-American artist includes an archive of what Beirut, Lebanon, looks like today, focusing “on the ways in which globalized communication brings idealized images from one culture in contact with the realities of another.” Her Fuel series examines the “unique landscape that has resulted from the dominance of the automobile industry in the United States,” and her series Julian follows the experiences of her brother, a single father raising his family on a Pennsylvania farm.
You can check out her work on Instagram here, and her website here.
Members of the PCA&D community will find a link to Abu-Shaheen’s Artist Talk in their This Week newsletters. Members of the public who would like to attend should email communications@pcad.edu for a link.
