Continuing Education Assistant: Kristi Barto
Where is your hometown/where did you grow up:
As a kid I grew up moving all over Eastern PA in Reading, Allentown, Lancaster, and Wilkes-Barre.
Where did you go to school/ degrees or certifications you hold:
I received my BFA in General Fine Arts with a concentration in Drawing at The Maryland Institute College of Art.
Prior work experience/ current:
I have worked in many different fields, as an art teacher at Germantown Academy in the suburbs of Philadelphia, as a pastry chef, even a landscaper! I am currently the Administrative Assistant in Continuing Education here at PCA&D and have an organic vegetable farm business with my husband in Mount Joy.
When did you first become interested in art/do you have a specific memory that you associate with this:
My sister and I were always drawing together for as long as I can remember. I took my first art class at The Baum School of Art in Allentown when I was 5 or 6 and I remember standing outside one of their large kilns in their ceramics department. I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen! I always knew I wanted to make art, but it wasn’t until Middle School that I knew I wanted to go to college to study it in earnest.
What kind of art do you make /what is your favorite medium to work in:
Lately I’ve been making a lot of digital designs for my husband and my business, but computers are not my favorite place to make art! When I am making art for my own creative practice, I am usually drawing or painting with ink or watercolor. Lately I have been working on wood cut print making and have loved exploring this new medium!
What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t making art:
I love to play the flute, bake a lot of bread, ride my bike, go backpacking with my husband, pet lots of dogs, be outside and spend time with my family!
