NYC gallerist Laurence Miller presenting Artist Talk this week

. . .

Tuesday, October 20th, 2020

PCA&D’s Photography & Video Department this week hosts a Virtual Artist Talk with New York City gallerist Laurence Miller. All members of the PCA&D community are welcome to attend.

Known for his promotion and sale of vintage and contemporary fine art photography and photo-based art, Miller has spent nearly 40 years collaborating with artists, collectors, curators, writers, and others in the fields of photography and contemporary art.

We asked Miller three quick questions in advance of his Thursday presentation:

From your perspective as a gallerist, especially one who deals in photography/contemporary art: Besides the technical aspect of their art, what’s a skill that photographers should be cultivating in order to make living a creative life possible?

LM: Actually the same as what my photo professor advised us, but for different reasons:  Have multiple skills, make your own books, combine photography with typography and design.  Today there are so many digital tools and platforms.

Your gallery recently made the pivot from public to private — how important for an artist is stretching and strengthening the ability to make changes such as this?

LM: Just be flexible and kind … if you are nice to people, they will be more inclined to help. Volunteer in (nonprofit galleries), be useful and cordial and meet as many people as you can.  You want people to recommend you.

What topics will you touch upon during your presentation to the PCA&D community?

LM: Do your own thing, but pay attention to history…you can imitate those artists you admire, but you have to add to the conversation, not just repeat it. Understand that your audience may know a lot more than you do.
