This class explores the history of faith-based responses to disaster (natural or man-made). Each of the four sessions will focus on a different civilization that faced large-scale disaster, and how it understood, coped with, and addressed what occurred. Each of these communities recorded their efforts to make sense of what happened in terms of their relationship with a deity or a host of deities.
This class will meet live in Google Meet at 7 pm.
Session 1: Ancient Mesopotamia and the Big Flood; depicted in Babylonian Myths and the Hebrew Bible. (~1800-500 BCE)
Session 2: Ancient China and the collapse of the Zhou Dynasty and the descent into civil war and chaos; addressed in Confucian and Taoist philosophy. (~900-400 BCE)
Session 3: The collapse of Ancient Rome and the rise of Christianity. (180-600 CE)
