Description

This online introductory level course will ask the student to explore two questions: how to paint? and how to paint digitally in Photoshop? We will begin studying the simple effects of light on form to learn to think like an observational painter, while exploring the digital tools that Adobe Photoshop has to offer. For any artist that is interested in digital painting we will focus on building understanding in rendering 3-dimensional form, light and its effect on local color, mark-making and using brushes in the digital space, Photoshop adjustment layers and their ability to create various lighting scenarios for your paintings, and getting comfortable in using Photoshop as an art-making tool. NOTE: Prior beginning-level knowledge of Photoshop is necessary to take this course.

This course must meet minimum enrollment by Janaury 25 in order to run. Register today!

Supplies

  • A Gmail.com email address – PCA&D uses Google Classroom for online classes. Gmail accounts are free to create.
  • Computer/tablet/internet-enabled device with mic/camera
  • Internet access
  • Adobe Photoshop. If you do not already have access to Photoshop, please provide your Adobe ID login email address for access to an active Adobe account (NO subscription necessary) Please contact ce@pcad.edu with your Adobe ID name after registration. The College will grant you access to download the software you need for successful completion of your course starting one week before the class date and one week after the course ends.
  • Computer capable of running Google Meet, G-Suite, Photoshop CC (Instructor will be running PS CC 2021 or newer). This class will be teaching the full desktop version of Photoshop. The instructor doesn’t use the tablet version of Photoshop or Procreate, so if these things are what you have, you will need to understand that while 80% of the instruction about painting and tools will absolutely apply to you and serve you well in Procreate or Adobe Fresco, you will need to find resources for specific technical assistance with your device and software.
  • Digital Drawing tablet and stylus pen set-up to work in Photoshop. There are many available tutorials online about how to configure your drawing tablet. If it is new please dedicate some time before the first week of class to get adjusted and work out any issues with the drivers. One quick tip is that software updates usually fix your issues, but also sometimes cause new ones. Ahead of class do any updates necessary with a few days spare to work out any new issues that might pop up.
  • Pen and Sketchbook to take notes: please do not plan on taking notes digitally on a personal laptop, phone, tablet, or in a separate program on the same screen you are painting on. Best practice for this class is a simple, old-fashioned sketchbook and a pen.
