Stephanie Mowery

Where is your hometown/where did you grow up:

Bergenfield New Jersey, about 10 minutes outside of New York City.  I grew up there and moved to Pennsylvania in 1993 to attend Millersville University.

Where did you go to school/ degrees or certifications you hold:

Millersville University:  Bachelors in Art Education (certified Kindergarten – 12th grade)

Millersville University Grad School (in progress) Certification in Early Education

Prior work experience/ current:

I have been teaching Art at Burrowes Elementary School in the School District of Lancaster for the last 17 years!  I now have several students whose parents I’ve had!  It is so exciting to see the next generation.  I love working with students of all ages and having them for several years in a row really lets me watch them grow into fine young ladies and gentlemen, as well as amazing artists!

When did you first become interested in art/do you have a specific memory that you associate with this:

I have always made art since I was a little girl.  My sister, Mom and I loved to create things, especially mixed-media collage way before we ever went to school.  I took art classes all my life in and outside of school, and as I got older, I enjoyed working with children so I knew teaching Art was the perfect profession for me!

What kind of art do you make /what is your favorite medium to work in:

My absolute favorite medium is watercolor painting.  I had an incredible professor at MU who opened up my painting world!  I also love drawing with pencil showing tiny details and realism.  I like colored pencils too and really enjoy teaching mixed media collage.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not making art?

My favorite thing to do when I am not making art is spending time with my husband and two awesome kids.  My daughter and son are also artists; they are so talented!  My husband is a painter and carpenter, so it is no surprise we are a family of artists.  We spend time with our huge Mowery family playing board games and relaxing outside, and we visit my family and college friends all the time traveling around and out of state.
