Arte de La Borinqueña

A visual storytelling of the original character and Puerto Rican patriotic symbol, La Borinqueña

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design is excited to announce the landmark exhibition Arte de La Borinqueña will be held in the College’s Main Gallery from January 17 – March 10, 2023. The exhibition opening will be held on January 17 at 5 pm and will include a talk with Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, an award-winning graphic novelist and creator of the superhero La Borinqueña. All ages are welcome.

Through the medium of a serialized comic, Miranda-Rodriguez has amplified and highlighted the importance of telling stories about Puerto Rico’s history, exploring present-day social and environmental issues, and celebrating the diversity of the Puerto Rican diaspora. La Borinqueña launched in 2016 under Miranda-Rodriguez’s studio, Somos Arte, where he serves as Creative Director and is a noted philanthropist. Edgardo Miranda-RodriguezThe story came at a pivotal moment for Latinx and Hispanic communities as political tension and a series of natural disasters rocked the Caribbean.

La Borinqueña has become a real-life superhero with a suite of graphic novels, a special anthology, Ricanstruction, benefitting grassroots organizations on the islands of Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria, partnerships with DC Comics, Chocolate Cortés, NRDC, and more. PCA&D is delighted to host the ever-growing exhibition dedicated to this noted character with Arte de La Borinqueña

“Not only do graphic arts and illustrations play a pivotal role here at PCA&D, but this specific character and story are an opportunity to connect to the largely Puerto Rican Latinx and Hispanic community here in Lancaster County,” says Alex Schaufele, Director of Exhibitions at PCA&D. “It is our hope that this exhibition and the related programming offered throughout its duration will connect art and community in a new way here at PCA&D.”

The College welcomes the public for the free opening celebration and artist talk on January 17. Look for more information on additional programming related to the exhibition soon.
