Meet the artists, including Samantha Hunsicker, Justin Carney, Courtney Scheingraber, and Olivia DiFilippo, who have led off this series of blog posts where PCA&D students talk about their art, inspirations and influences, and thoughts about their education.

This is the third in this series, featuring our first set of spokes-students, Samantha Hunsicker, Justin Carney, Courtney Scheingraber, and Olivia DiFilippo, as they share their thoughts about their inspirations and internship plans for the summer.

What inspires you to create?

Life and the things that happen to me inspire me to create. My more recent work had been about my struggle with mental illness but on the horizon I’m starting to start over and create work just about the beauty and fragileness of nature and life. A lot of things tend to inspire me mostly other artists, such as Will Cotton, Naomi Okubo and Yayoi Kusama, Japanese traditions and culture, such as Ikebana, Harajuku Fashion, Manga, and Kabuki, and art movements, such as Dadaism and Art Nouveau.

I’m interested in just about anything and everything. So, life inspires me? I’m just a really curious kid, really. But a big factor that plays an important role in my life is anime. Many series open up my mind to what life can be or what it already is and what I’ve yet to see. Anime inspires me to find amazement in the world.

I look at the great masters of art, I attend shows, I look at pieces by current artists, and my classmates, I look at advertising, prints, original paintings, photographs, and most importantly I stop and look at the world around me. Life itself has been my greatest inspiration simply because there are stories behind each life and each environment.

I’m inspired by so many things! Lately I’ve been inspired by Kurt Vonnegut and nature walks I’ve been going on, but I am constantly finding inspiration in other artists especially my peers and professors.

 

Do you have an internship planned for this summer? What are you looking forward to about this summer?

(Note: Internships are required for the BFA degree at PCA&D, and most students take their internship during the summer between junior and senior year)

Yes, I actually have two internships that I’m going to do at the same time. The first is going to work at a festival location called Four Quarters Farm in Artemas Pa for two and half months. The second is with a Graphic Designer named Kurt Griffith. I’m excited about expanding my horizons in both art and experiences this summer and working really hard.

The only definite plans I have this summer is to photograph. What, I do not know. But I want to play with film and grow, and just shoot, shoot, shoot.

I have a mentorship for the summer; I will be working with Lindsey Look to create a book jacket for a children’s book I will be working on. I’m looking forward to working on this book jacket as well as doing commission work and just taking the time to paint what I want.

Olivia DiFilippo, Fine Art, Class of 2017

I have two internships this semester! My first one is at the Creative Vision Factory in Wilmington Delaware. CVF is a artist run public space where anyone can go and use the space to make work. They are responsible for a lot of the murals around Wilmington and are helping to encourage art in the city and people’s everyday lives! My second internship is helping out at the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club with art activities. I’m super excited to be making both of my cities more beautiful this summer!

“Selected Artworks from the BFA program at PCA&D” will be on exhibit in the Main Gallery at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, 204 N Prince Street, Lancaster, from June 3 to August 12, 2016.  Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A wide variety of media are represented including digital and hand-painted illustration, sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography and graphic design.

The Opening First Friday Reception, will be held First Friday June 3 from 5 – 8 p.m. in the Main Gallery.
