Welcoming PCA&D’s returning students to the 2016-17 year

Welcome back PCA&D Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomores!

The 2016-17 year kicked off August 30 at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design with Fall Orientation for Returning and Transfer Students.

To begin the day, PCA&D President Mary Colleen Heil welcomed upper class BFA art students to the new year and said, “We are a great place and people know it!” She encouraged students to read Money Under 30’s article “Best Cities For Artists: 5 Affordable Places To Be Creative.” Academic Dean Marc Torick presented new focus on Connective Curriculum and the intersection of Hand and Digital Tools.

The event was sponsored by House of Pizza,Canteen Vending Services, Distinctive Affairs Catering, Simply from Scratch, LaPiazza, and Stoner Inc. Lunch was provided by House of Pizza. 

Students played Information Fair BINGO, visiting booths of community organizations and businesses to learn about beneficial local services. At the information Fair were Lancaster City Alliance, Library System of Lancaster County, League of Women Voters, Compass Mark, Lancaster Recreation Commission, Red Rose Transit, Excentia, Mental Health America of Lancaster County, Lancaster Central Market, SouthEast Lancaster Health Services, YWCA, Lancaster Office of Promotion, The Common Wheel, Lancaster Federal Credit Union, Mullen’s Books, B&T Sportswear andCanteen Vending Services.

Seniors met with their Department Chair William Mammarella to talk about the Senior Thesis Project and were assigned their Senior Spaces.

Safety in Lancaster was the topic of discussion with with Sgt Bill Hickey, Lancaster City Police, David Aichele, Director of Clean and Safe Services, Lancaster City Alliance and Dean Jessica Edonick. Topics included tips for safety at their apartments and traveling to and from campus, where the nearest ATM is (the Police Station lobby, which is adjacent to PCA&D’s Art Garden), the least expensive soda machine in town (also the Police Station Lobby), how to say say “no” to panhandlers, and more.

The day included break out presentations on “Managing Your Financial Future,” presented by Amanda Scheler, AVP, Campus Relations Manager, PNC Bank, “Get Into The Game – Time Management Strategies,” presented by Michael Hoober, LPC, PCA&D Counselor, and “Cultural Awareness and Diversity Workshop,” presented by Nick Miron, Director of Social Justice and Advocacy,YWCA.  financial issues and cultural diversity, and an all-important demo and tour of the College’s new arts and technology space, presented by the PCA&D IT department.

Students also met with the faculty from their departments and seniors were assigned their Senior Studio spaces, where during the year, they will work on their senior thesis project.

Each student received a 2016 PCA&D T-shirt. This year’s shirt (photo at top) was designed by Graphic Design junior Patrick Foley and was selected by the students from designs submitted by members of the student body.
