Black Lives Matter
PCA&D’s Art Garden is an open green space adjacent to the Lancaster City Police station. Because of its location in the city, the plot organically became a hub for protests and mourning in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis during the Spring of 2020 and throughout the following summer.
We were privileged to provide this resource for the community, where Lancaster Public Art worked with local artists to transform it into a cathartic creative zone.
Not Forgotten
In collaboration with the artists, their work is now being documented and the College is collaborating with them to preserve their work as a historical record of art created during the Black Lives Matter protests. This is being done for two reasons:
1. Much of the art was designed to be temporary and cannot withstand long exposure to the elements.
2. With the return of PCA&D students to campus, and especially in this COVID moment where outdoor events are recommended, this College space is needed for classwork, student projects, and events in these times when physical distancing is required.
The College is committed to working with the artists and Lancaster Public Art in this process and committed to creating space for more public artmaking in the future.
We are grateful to the vision and generosity of the participating artists and community members who created and supported this work.
