It took hard work, many iterations of design, and some "underdog" good fortune, and now Pennsylvania College of Art & Design has a national champion team. This fall, Logan Byer '25, Graphic Design, Cam Maier '26, Animation & Game Art, and 2024 alumni Bahir Harris and Kendall Harris-Burton, both Graphic Design majors, placed at the top of the Paperboard Packaging Council's nationwide design contest. Their victory, in Atlanta, came against multiple teams from much larger colleges and universities. Led by Graphic Design Adjunct Tom Newmaster, the team brought their project -- sustainable paperboard packaging for potatoes -- to compete against teams from Rochester Institute of Technology and California State Polytechnic University. ... Every student who comes through the doors of Pennsylvania College of Art & Design has a touchpoint with Student Services. Even if you're a commuter, or not living in student housing, you have the opportunity to be impacted by the activities, clubs, and both everyday and special-event outreach of this department. But have you ever wondered who does what, how to reach out with questions, or how you yourself can make an impact in this department (and yes, there's room for that, too!)? We reached out to members of the Student Services team to hear directly from team members not only about how they affect day-to-day life at PCA&D, but also about how their passion lies with making daily impact on the students of the College. ... Peter Van Dyck says he never really feels like he’s finished with a piece β€” but his luminous work nevertheless captures still moments of time in which you can feel the light and the space that surrounded him while painting. Van Dyck, who visits campus Friday, Oct. 25 as a guest of the Fine Art Department, says he approaches all his subjects the same way, whether they be landscape, still-life, or interior. And they often capture the interplay and blend any dividing line between β€œhere” and β€œover there”, between interior and exterior, or the way objects relate to one another. Van Dyck’s Artist Talk will be delivered at 12:45 PM Oct. 25 in The LookOut, and the entire campus community is welcome to attend! ... It's easy to forget that water we drink and use doesn't just appear from a faucet -- in much of Lancaster's case, it flows from the Conestoga River. Those storm drains located at many city corners do, too. Bringing awareness of that connection, and the need for communities to steward care of the river, is the goal of Lancaster River Connections. And this summer, three PCA&D student artists were selected to design and create murals that serve as reminders to passersby that how we treat the river that flows by Lancaster City has an ultimate impact on our neighborhoods, our environment, our businesses, and our selves. The team of Charlie Boyce, Krista Canoles, and Katie Hess earned internship credits for their work, which spans a variety of styles and themes, from the river's ecosystem to nods to adjacent businesses. The experience, they all say, reflects an interest in the environment they already had, and was a rewarding way to have an impact on the community their college calls home.
