Cardboard Puppets

Puppets are so fun! Here is a way to easily make puppets out of cardboard tubes you can collect from toilet paper and paper towels.

Step 1

Gather supplies! You will need:

  • Scissors
  • Colored paper
  • Cardboard tube
  • Paint or markers
  • A pencil
  • String
  • Glue (tacky glue, white glue, or if a parent can help you can use a glue gun)

Supplies you may also want but do not need:

  • Tape
  • Stickers
  • Googly eyes
  • Felt or multi-colored paper

Step 2

Take a cardboard tube and draw a line around the tube about 1/3 of the way down. Make sure you do not connect the line and leave about a half inch between the ends of the line. This will become a hinge for the mount.

Cut around the line.

Now make a hole in the small part of the tube right above the hinge.

Step 3

Cut a piece of string and feed it through the hole. Pull it through and up over the top of the tube and tape it down.

Step 4

Decorate! You can use paints, colored paper, stickers, or markers. We painted our puppet bodies and made the faces, hair and eyes out of paper.

Step 5

Now it’s time to perform! Write a story and perform your puppet masterpiece.
