In Depth

An Exploration of Pictorial Space

In Depth, an exhibition that explores languages within contemporary painting, opens at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) in Lancaster, is proud to present In Depth, an exhibition exploring the range and scope of contemporary painting. The exhibition opens Friday, April 7, with a reception from 5-8 pm in the Main Gallery. Curated by Assistant Professor Aaron M. Thompson (Fine Art / Foundation), In Depth presents work by 30 artists drawn from national and international collections.

As Thompson writes in his curatorial statement, In Depth focuses on “painting and the relationships between pictorial space, physical surface, and the physical space of viewing, with the intention of creating an experience that ranges from intimate to encompassing … Surface, pictorial space, and scale have lasting impact on our relationship with a painting and how we interact with it in person and in memory.”

The exhibition, Thompson adds, “features an eclectic range of contemporary paintings by artists that express interest in pictorial space and surface.”

In Depth offers PCA&D students and the greater community an opportunity to see creative explorations of pictorial space by contemporary painters,” says Alex Schaufele, PCA&D Director of Exhibitions. “Guests may expect to experience paintings at monumental and miniature scale ranging from the realistic to the abstract as varied as the artists who produced them.”

In Depth also features additional programming that serves to give the audience a more nuanced understanding of the works included in the show. Artist Edmond Praybe, whose work appears in In Depth, visits the campus Thursday, April 20, for a 12:45 pm Artist Talk. The event, in the College’s Atrium, is open to the public. A virtual walk-through of the exhibition will be hosted by Winslow Art Center on Friday, April 14, from 2-3 pm.
