When the Lancaster Stormers baseball team takes the field for opening day this week, a little piece of PCA&D also makes its lineup debut.

A new ballcap design, created by Graphic Design junior Maddie Reynolds, will go on sale in the team’s store.

“I was looking at what younger generations are into, and also wanted to pull in a vintage feel,” said Reynolds, a native of Parkesburg, Pa. Her end result, a curved “Stormers” text superimposed over an outline of homeplate, carries over that simple, but vintage, vibe.

“The goal,” said Prof. Pamela Barby, for whom the ballcap was a class assignment, “was to create a baseball cap that would appeal to families and the younger generation, representing the community of Lancaster and baseball … The students used design thinking tools such as mind maps, sources of inspiration, and peer-to-peer critique to arrive at the best solutions in the end.

Five finalists — Warren Burke, Bahir Harris, Aiyana Alvarado, and Leslie Bosch, along with Reynolds — were chosen, and Reynolds’ design was chosen by a public vote on social media.

It’s the second time a PCA&D student has designed merch for the Stormers. In 2021, a ballcap designed by Grace Keefe ’22, Graphic Design, was part of the team store’s lineup.

“We have noticed since the last collaboration such an uptick in our younger fan base here at the stadium,” said Samantha Biastre, the Stormers’ senior account executive and team store coordinator. “So we had wanted to have a hat for sale in the team store that appealed to that demographic and that also brought a new spin on the (recently renamed) Stormers as well as making sure that Lancaster County was also incorporated into the design.”
