Web artist Molly Soda visits PCA&D

Web artist Molly Soda visited PCA&D today as a guest of the Photography Department and spoke to the students about the development of her multi-faceted web and video based art practice.
According to Soda, when she started at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where she majored in photography, she was very anti-digital photography, but very interested in self-portraiture.
She never changed her focus on self-portraiture. However, her webdesign professor introduced the concept of a website as art, and she was drawn to the idea of using evolving technologies, from My Space and Xanga, to Tumblr and YouTube as a platform for her art. She soon created an online persona, using that to frame her character-based beauty videos which gained an impressive following.
Her current work includes Karaoke poetry videos, zines and increasingly, solo and collaborative gallery exhibitions, using videos as well as augmented reality. Her most recent show was at the 315 Gallery in Brooklyn, where she will be showing again in March.
Soda’s work does not typically occur in a traditional gallery or museum setting, and may not even occur within a typical art context at all. All of her artwork resides online. She uses the internet as her medium. Soda has generated a significant online following, sharing her web-based performances across social media platforms including Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter. http://mollysoda.exposed
