Charlie Boyce

Fine Art, BFA

I am very interested in a somewhat surrealist, especially dadaist approach to art, with added inspiration from the recognizable pop culture reference and/or not-as-recognizable niche allusion that infatuates me at the moment. There are a plethora of overarching as well as minimal reasons I have to make a creative decision in a work, so much so that it would surely take me hours to try and explain every little thing. This complicated reactivity is pivotal to making something I’m passionate about. I like to rethink boundaries and labels of work; what aspects of a work makes a painting a painting, a sculpture a sculpture? This idea of recognizability (or lack thereof) is one that is reflected in which materials I choose to use; scrappier materials that one wouldn’t typically consider to be “elegant” such as cardboard, wood, acrylic paint, the list goes on. I love the bright and loud, the contradictory and reinterpretation, the chaos and the complex.

Charlie Boyce is a mixed-media artist who uses found objects/materials in their work. She holds an interest in questioning the boundaries of artistic labels both in the literal and societal sense of the word. Their work has recently been featured in the Art Gallery at North Museum of Nature and Science, and they’ve been involved in city-funded public street mural painting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
