Thesis Project

Sophia Phillips uses graphic design to explore sustainability in the fashion industry. Her inspiration for the project stems from her knowledge of textile waste and a passion for sewing. Combining the two, her thesis was born as a sustainable clothing brand with handmade pieces. Her project, Not Your Grandma’s, originated from taking the old clothing found at thrift stores. Utilizing grandmother’s outdated garments, and extending their life cycle by turning them into something modern.

Sophia is a graphic designer from Abingdon, Maryland. She Transferred to PCA&D in the fall of 2022 from Harford Community College. She has been on the Dean’s List every semester since her transfer. Following graduation, Sophia would like to work in publication design or marketing. Her passions lie in film and fashion, she would love to find work in either industry. Sophia is excited to explore this new chapter in her life.
