Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s most recent viewbook, the College’s statement piece produced as part of its rebranding, was recently recognized with the Power of Print Award (Best of Show) at this year’s Neographics Print Competition.

Chosen from hundreds of regional entries from printing and graphics firms throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and New York, the viewbook was manufactured by The Standard Group of Lancaster and Reading. The Standard Group also received nine Best of Category Awards, 10 Franklin Awards for Excellence, and three Best of Show Awards.

“I’m delighted that PCA&D’s viewbook won the Power of Print Award,” says Daina Savage, the College’s Vice President of Strategic Communications. “The viewbook … is an amazing tactile, visual experience,” with innovative, interactive folding and construction that bring the reader into the design process itself.

A viewbook holds a unique place in the image and sense of a college. “The purpose of the viewbook is to create awareness and make an impression by communicating the instruction’s culture and an authentic sense of place,” says Dean of Admissions Carol Descak. “We want to tell our unique story through student and campus life photos. Ultimately if we have piqued interest, the student should take the next step by visiting the website, applying, or visiting campus.”

While some might say that technology has replaced print materials, Descak adds, “a tangible representation of the college is meaningful and relevant — especially a viewbook from an art college that showcases student work and illustrates that ‘you see differently, and so do we.'”

The viewbook design was the work of Lewis Advertising Design, Inc., York, Pennsylvania. “I’m both humbled and happy to have been a collaborative part of The Standard Group’s receiving the Power of Print Award,” says Rick Lewis, the firm’s President and Creative Director. Lewis, who partnered with the College for a rebranding that led to this viewbook, has a deeper connection as his college art instructors went on to found what is now PCA&D.

“I love this viewbook. It’s truly a combined effort of strategic vision, beautiful photography and design, and a dedication to the craft of printing,” Keegan Worley, CFO of The Standard Group. “We are grateful for our partnership with PCA&D and Lewis Advertising Design Inc. and thrilled to have won the Power of Print award back-to-back.”
