Description

This introductory oil painting class for students in grades 9-12 is expansive and informative. Covering observational techniques, master copies, and synthesizing memory and observation, students will learn proper and safe handling of oil paint and its materials, correct surface preparation, and various methods of painting in oil and their historical context. Students should expect to explore how to see and plan a composition, navigate color theory and relationships, and paint in expressive and illusionistic ways. Process from ideation to completed painting is a focus in the course, and students will gain skills for measuring and translating ideas into visual representations amid gaining valuable skills and knowledge of oil painting techniques and materials.

This is a credit-bearing class and grades will be given. Please check the supply list tab for materials needed to complete this class.

Supply List

  • Watercolor paper 11″x14″
  • Acrylic gesso
  • 4 gessoed canvases or panels size 16″x20″ or 18″x24″
  • Variety of brush shapes and sizes
  • Oil medium – walnut or linseed oil
  • 2 metal or glass jars with lids – small to medium
  • Drawing board
  • Artist tape
  • Oil paint: raw umber, burnt sienna, ivory black, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, lemon yellow, alizarin crimson, naphthol red, viridian, titanium white.
  • Palette paper, glass palette, or wood palette
  • Palette knife
